Promotional Lanyard Information

A lanyard is simply a cord to hold useful items. The most popular commercially available lanyards are for holding identity cards and/or security badges comfortably and securely around the neck, allowing the card to be clearly seen. But these are by no means the only type of lanyard. Lanyards can hold all sorts of small items that are frequently used and yet easy to lose. Pens, keys, USB keys and smartphones are all examples of items that can be attached to lanyards so that they're always within easy reach.

Perfect for Conferences & Events
Because of their usefulness and ubiquity within organisations, branded lanyards are becoming increasingly popular. We can have your organisation's branding printed on or woven into a lanyard cord, ensuring that your brand is always visible to your employees and visitors. They can also be given away as a useful and attractive promotional item, suitable for giveaways in corporate, education, and sporting environments.

History of Lanyards
The term 'lanyard' originally referred to a type of rope that was used on sailing ships. The term passed into use in the military, where it gained its modern meaning a type of cord worn to secure small items for easy reach, such as whistles or even revolvers. Now, with people having to deal with an increasing number of small but necessary items, lanyards are in wider use than ever. Customised branded lanyards allow smart businesses to take advantage of this phenomenon to get their brand where it will be seen.

Lanyards are used anywhere that a small item needs to be kept accessible and handy -- and in this day and age, that means everywhere. From security passes to water bottles to mobile phones, you can always find a use for a lanyard.

Lanyards in the Office
Printed lanyards for holding identification cards or security passes are used in businesses, hospitals, schools and police stations. Lanyards mean no one has to fumble in their pockets or purses for their security passes. They're always in plain view for anyone to see.

In addition, custom branded lanyards can be used to keep track of a wide variety of small items that may need to be accessed in a hurry. If you're tired of never being able to find a pen when you need one, a lanyard will help keep one handy, without running the risk of ink-staining your pockets. Lanyards are a great way of keeping important keys where you need them. Clips make it easy to attach your key ring to your person, and a colourful branded lanyard increases the visibility of your keys, making them difficult to forget and leave behind.

Lanyards Outside of the Office
Charities find it very useful to give their collectors and other volunteers branded lanyards for displaying their identification. Any business that sends people door to door will find them useful, allowing potential customers to see, quickly and definitively, that they are dealing with a legitimate agent. Real estate agencies, utility companies, couriers and anyone who sells to the door will find a use for lanyards.

Lanyards at Play
You don't need to be at work to need a lanyard. Printed lanyards are a great way to keep water bottles, mobile phones, small maps and car keys accessible, making lanyards just as indispensable on a bushwalk as they are in an office building!

Lanyard Planet does not only supply lanyards for identity security pass cards. We also provide lanyards with attachments suitable for essential everyday items such as:

  • Pens
  • Water Bottles

We also provide lanyards with promotional pens and whistles already attached.

There are several different configurations that are possible for your custom branded lanyards. An important distinction is between closed lanyards and open-ended lanyards.

Closed Lanyards
A closed promotional lanyard is a loop of fabric cord. The ends of the loop are sewn together. A smaller loop is sewn into the large loop, and the safety breakaway and the main clip are attached to this smaller loop. This means that the loop cannot be opened or closed, the entire unit must be worn by putting your head through the loop. To secure a lanyard pocket, a single clip is used which attaches to the middle of the lanyard pocket.

Open Lanyards
In an open-ended lanyard, the loop is not sewn closed. The wearer closes the loop with a clip. This gives the wearer the option of either putting their head through the closed loop or closing the loop around the neck like a necklace. To secure a lanyard pocket, an open lanyard will utilize 2 clips which will be located on each end of the lanyard. Each clip will then fasten itself on either side of the lanyard pocket.

Our card holders and pouches are designed to work with our lanyards but will work with most standard J-hooks and alligator clips. Our card holders and pouches are made from PVC plastic and feature pre-punched holes to accommodate:

  • Standard Lanyard Clips
  • Alligator Lanyard Clips
  • J-Shaped Lanyard Hooks

The lanyard clips and hooks, simply clip, or loop through the pre-punched holes on the card holder.

If you may have purchased either lanyards or pouches from another vendor, or have ones that are left over from a previous event, then you will be glad to know that both, clips and pouches are relatively standard. This means any lanyard or pouch purchased from us will be usable with products purchased elsewhere.

The length of a printed or woven lanyard varies quite a lot, depending on what use the lanyard is intended for.

For a standard lanyard, a standard length is 90cm, meaning that it forms a 45cm loop.

A standard lanyard will fit loosely around the neck and puts the badge at chest level for average height adults.

Other lanyards can come in different sizes. For example, a custom lanyard for keys can be either the same length as a standard lanyard if the keys are being worn around the neck, but much shorter if it's intended to fit in a pocket.

Ask our experienced sales staff
If you're not sure how long your branded lanyard should be, ask our sales staff. They have the experience and the know-how to ensure that you get the lanyard that fits your needs.

At Cheapest Lanyards we can supply custom branded lanyards in a huge range of lengths and thicknesses. One advantage of this is that we can size neck lanyards for children. This can be handy for situations in which children need to have clearly visible identification - excursions, camps, large school gatherings and so on. Our lanyards are supplied custom printed with graphics and logos. They are also fun and useful giveaways in educational settings.

Children Sized Lanyards
Standard lanyards are made of a length of cord 90 cm long, meaning that they are about 45 cm long when worn. While this is an appropriate length for adults and older teenagers, it may well be too long for smaller children. If you need lanyards to fit around the necks of younger children, please ask our friendly sales staff, and we can supply a shorter lanyard length for you. Please be aware that lanyards long enough to wrap around the neck may constitute choking hazards, and so are not recommended for toddlers or infants.

We have a wide range of lanyards available, but by far the most popular is the 15mm ribbed lanyard. Combining simplicity, easy to read flat-surface printing and affordable cost, these are easily our most frequently ordered product.

Lanyards are usually fitted around the neck, or clipped to a piece of clothing or bag. This makes them handy, but it also means that they can be hazardous if they catch on something. This is why many lanyards come with a safety breakaway clip. It is a piece of plastic which detaches itself and breaks when there is excessive force applied.

In the event that the lanyard catches on something, or someone pulls too hard on the lanyard (accidentally or deliberately), this force causes the clip to open releasing the lanyard. Most Lanyard Planet custom branded lanyards have breakaway clips available as an option, and some models have them as standard.

Useful and safe
This breakaway function is part of what makes a lanyard such a useful device. Some of the situations in which this clip is useful include:

  • Catching - if the lanyard catches on anything, the breakaway clip will prevent this shock from being transferred to the lanyard's wearer.
  • Falls - if falling, the lanyard can't catch on anything. Likewise, a falling person can reflectively try to grab someone's lanyard. if that happens, the clip will prevent that from causing harm.
  • Security workers - lanyard cannot be used as a weapon against them.
  • Hospital personnel - people in pain or shock can attempt to grab hold of lanyards.
  • School and childcare workers - while adults generally won't deliberately pull on a lanyard, younger children often don't know better.
  • Machinery - should the lanyard be caught in machinery; it will simply break away.

While in all of these situations care should be taken, with the breakaway function, these and other issues should not interfere with safe lanyard use.

If your lanyard arrives misprinted, just contact our sales staff who will organise replacements. Likewise, we will replace lanyards that have been improperly manufactured. Should your lanyards be damaged in transit, we will contact our third party freight company on your behalf.

Yes. Your branding -- whether printed onto the lanyard or woven in -- will be printed along the length of the lanyard, and so wrap around its length. This is standard on all our lanyards, regardless of configuration. By this means, we are able to ensure maximum visibility for your brand at a standard cost.

Wraparound branding is the industry standard for printed lanyards. Whether the lanyard is placed neatly around the neck, worn haphazardly or just lying in a heap on a desk, the printed branding is still clearly visible.

An over-the-neck lanyard is a great way to keep a paper security pass visible, but sometimes it isn't enough. In some situations, a security pass also contains an electronic key card or some other device that needs to be physically deployed. Retractable pass holders are a great way around this problem. The retractable badge unit clips to a pocket, leaving your ID clearly visible -- just like a lanyard. Unlike a lanyard, the pass is connected to a long, flexible cord which is wound up inside the badge unit. When you need to wave your pass at an electronic door lock, just pull gently on the cord, extending it to arm's length. Then 'peep' your way through the door and let the cord retract on an internal spring mechanism. The mechanism isn't limited to electronic keys, these make handy conventional key chains too.

Your logo on a retractable badge holder
We digitally print your brand, logo or other custom artwork and put it on an insert in the badge holder of your choice. Not only do these make handy, useful tools for your staff, they make colourful and functional giveaways in a wide variety of promotional situations. attractive, colourful, inexpensive and useful -- we can have your badge holders at your door within two weeks of your approval of artwork.
